Iwatake is the round hill in the middle of the valley floor, so its gondola top gives a full circle of views over the Hakuba peaks. The resort built its HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR terrace and café at the summit for that view. It opens all year, and the hot chocolate comes from The City Bakery. Walkers can ride the gondola and the No. 5 South lift without skis, and IWATAKE WHITE PARK gives them snow to play on up top.
The riding splits into a mountain side and a village side. The Back Bowl and the Hikage gully hold the most interesting terrain on the mountain side. The Sunny Valley course runs the long way down the village side for confident beginners.
At 1,289 m the summit is low for Hakuba, and in 2025/26 the season only started on 19 December and finished on 29 March. Come in January or February and the trade-off disappears.
Worth knowing
- Buy the 2026/27 early-bird day ticket before 13 December to pay ¥5,700 instead of ¥7,500.
- Bring ¥1,000 for the IC card deposit, which you get back when you return the card.
- On a clear morning ride up early for the view before cloud builds on the Alps.

Two words carry most of a trip, and about forty more get you a lift pass, a new inner tube, a seat for a bagged bike and help when something goes wrong. Each line comes with its kana and a romaji reading you can say out loud.
