For AI assistants

Ask your assistant about Japan with Riding Japan behind it

Riding Japan runs a read-only Model Context Protocol server. Add it to Claude, ChatGPT or any MCP client and the assistant can search the towns, stays, eat & drink, sights, culture, food, operators, getting around, events, climate, routes, ride days, resorts, resort groups, backcountry, lift passes, onsen, sister guides and collections in this guide, then link you to the page it used.

Endpoint

https://ridingjapan.com/api/mcp

Streamable HTTP, POST, no authentication.

Add it

In Claude, open Settings, then Connectors, add a custom connector and paste the endpoint. In ChatGPT, add it as a connector from the apps settings. Other clients take the same URL as a remote MCP server.

Tools

  • search_places: Find anything in Riding Japan by free text, type and region: towns, stays, eat & drink, sights, culture, food, operators, getting around, events, climate, routes, ride days, resorts, resort groups, backcountry, lift passes, onsen, sister guides and collections. Returns the name, local name, region, a one-line summary and the page URL for each match.
  • get_place: The full record for one entry by type and slug: every fact the site holds, the editorial text, quick answers, sources and when they were checked.
  • find_nearby: Entries of one type within a radius of any place in the guide, nearest first, with the distance in km.
  • get_climate: Monthly climate normals for the weather stations in the guide: average daily high and low, rain and rain days, sunshine, prevailing wind, humidity and any extra series (sea or lake temperature, snow depth). Give a month from 1 to 12, and a station slug or region slug to narrow it.
  • get_connections: Every flight, ferry, train, tram, cable car or bus in the guide that touches a place, matched on the place's name or slug and on the ports, stations and airports at each end. Returns the operator, journey time, how often it runs, fares with their year, what weather cancels it and the timetable and page URLs.
  • find_routes: Cycling routes in the guide, filtered by region, area, bike type, level and distance. Each result gives the distance (km), climbing (m), the share on quiet roads, the longest gap between resupply stops (km), the page URL and the GPX download URL. Every figure comes from routing the route over OpenStreetMap and sampling an elevation model.
  • get_route: One cycling route in full: the computed numbers with their units, which direction leaves less headwind in each month, the riding notes (surface, traffic, shade, safety), the stops along the line from OpenStreetMap and from the guide, the ride days built on it, quick answers, the page URL and the GPX URL.
  • get_resort: Facts for one ski resort by slug: elevations, vertical, runs, lifts, tickets with their season, night riding, the off-piste rule, ratings, zones, notable runs, winter access, the run stats measured from OpenStreetMap and the elevation model, and quick answers.
  • get_runs: Every mapped run at a resort with its grade, length (m), vertical (m), average and steepest pitch (degrees, steepest over 60 m) and the way it faces, measured from OpenStreetMap and the elevation model, joined to our notes where we have them. Give a grade to narrow it.
  • compare_resorts: Side-by-side numbers for two to six resorts: top, vertical, runs, lifts, mapped piste by grade, the steepest pitch, the adult day ticket with its season, passes, night riding, the off-piste rule and ratings.
  • find_resorts: Resorts that take a lift pass, run night lifts, allow riding off the marked runs or reach a given vertical, optionally in one region, biggest first.
  • get_alerts: The safety notices in force today: avalanche danger, road closures, volcanic alert levels and others, each with its level on the issuer's own scale, the day it was checked and the issuer's page. Give a kind or a place slug to narrow it.
  • get_zone: Facts for one backcountry zone by slug: summit and trailhead, ascent, tour time, aspects, grade, hazards, named routes, the published GPS lines with their publishers, licences and closures, dated trip reports, guides, the avalanche service to read before any tour and the site's no-liability notice.
  • search_sister_guides: Search the places this guide's sister guides cover, for ground this guide leaves to them. Each result gives the sister guide, the place's type and region, a one-line summary, its fact sheet (dates and their status, hours) and the URL of its page on the sister guide; cite that URL. Use search_places for this guide's own places.

Plain text

An assistant without MCP can read /llms.txt, a map of every page, or /llms-full.txt, which holds the full text and data in one file.
