Omachi is the mountain town at the south end of Hakuba Valley and the Nagano gateway to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, and it suits spring travellers and quieter ski trips to Kashimayari and Jigatake. The trade-off is winter quiet: the Alpine Route is shut from December to mid-April.

Who should base here
Stay in Omachi if you are crossing the Alpine Route in spring or want the quiet south end of Hakuba Valley in winter. Anyone after nightlife should base in Hakuba.
Omachi borders Hakuba to the north and Toyama to the west, under 3,000-metre peaks and beside the three Nishina lakes. The Omachi Onsen-kyo hot-spring village sits on the road up to Ogizawa, where the Alpine Route begins on the Nagano side.
The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route operated from 15 April to 30 November in 2026, so spring is when Omachi fills with people heading for the snow walls. In winter the town is the quiet end of Hakuba Valley, with Kashimayari and Jigatake ski areas on its doorstep and JR Oito Line trains from Shinano-Omachi Station.
