Happo no Yu is the biggest of Hakuba Happo Onsen's four day baths, and it suits skiers coming off Happo-one who want a long soak with a mountain view; at ¥1,000 for adults in 2026 it costs more than the other three.
Know before you bathe
The 2018 sign text asks bathers not to take photos anywhere in the bathing area and not to bring alcohol into the bath. Wash before soaking and keep your towel out of the water.
Getting there
At the entrance to the Happo onsen streets, about ten minutes on foot from the Happo-one gondola station and five minutes by car from Hakuba Station.
Happo no Yu sits at the entrance to the Happo onsen streets, about ten minutes' walk from the Happo-one gondola. Its rotenburo looks out on the Hakuba Sanzan and the rest of the range. Happo-one Kaihatsu owns the Hakuba Happo Onsen source and runs this bath along with Mimizuku no Yu, Obinata no Yu and Sato no Yu.
The water comes from serpentine rock on the Itoigawa-Shizuoka tectonic line and tests at pH 11.2 at the source, which makes it feel slick on the skin. The operator calls it Japan's only natural hydrogen hot spring, after Tokyo Institute of Technology researchers found dissolved hydrogen in the samples, including in this bath's rotenburo.
Entry is ¥1,000 for adults, and the bath opens every day from 10:00 to 21:00. Soap, shampoo and dryers are free, so all you need is a towel, which you can buy at the counter for ¥300.
Worth knowing
- Mimizuku no Yu, nearer Hakuba Station, costs ¥800 and also has a rotenburo with a view of the Hakuba Sanzan.
- Cover a small tattoo with a skin-coloured waterproof patch and ask at the counter before you go in.
