Beyond the ropes · Through gates
Cortina is one of the five Hakuba Valley resorts with a designated backcountry gate, and its trees and steep top pitches draw riders from abroad on storm days.
- Leave the ski area only through the designated gate; crossing the boundary partway down a run is forbidden
- Carry an avalanche transceiver, a probe and a shovel and file a tour plan before you go
- When a private rescue team is called out, the person rescued pays the cost
- Read the Japan Avalanche Network bulletin for Hakuba before you go out

Get thereアクセス
From Tokyo Station
- Bus
- The Nagano–Cortina bus needs a booking; Cortina warns that road conditions can delay it.
- Train
- Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagano, about 79 minutes, then the reservation-only Alpico express bus to Cortina, about 120 minutes.
Rail riders through Hakuba can take the Oito Line to Minami-Otari and the hotel's free shuttle bus.
The nearest station is Minami-Otari. JR Oito Line; free shuttle bus to the resort.
The Hakuba Valley shuttle reaches Cortina on Line V, free with a Hakuba Valley pass. Alpico buses cannot carry passengers between Hakuba Goryu and Cortina in winter, so use the valley shuttle for that hop.
Cortina is the last resort at the north end of the valley, and the 253-room Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba stands at the foot of its slopes. Nearly every run drains back into the Ikenota slope in front of the hotel, so families can let children ride and still find them.
The resort uses only natural snow, and Hakuba Valley says it gets more of it than anywhere else in the valley. That snow is what brings riders up from Hakuba village on storm days. Hiedayama No. 2 is the steepest pitch, and Itadaira drops off its ridge at a steady angle.
For 2026/27 Cortina and Hakuba Norikura sell only one joint ticket, ¥6,500 a day for 15 lifts and 30 runs across both. The season is planned from 12 December to 29 March, and night riding runs over New Year and on winter Saturdays.
Worth knowing
- Book a web ticket to save ¥400 on your first day and recharge online after that.
- The Alpico bus from Nagano needs a reservation and takes about two hours. Rail riders coming through Hakuba can change to the Oito Line for Minami-Otari and take the hotel's free shuttle.
- Go early on a powder day. The trees off the top get tracked out by late morning.
