Hakkoda suits experienced skiers and onsen lovers who want deep snow, one ropeway and old mountain inns with nothing else around them. The trade-off is weather, since the ropeway stops whenever the wind reaches 25 metres a second.

Iwate, Aomori and Akita keep bear warnings in force through the autumn
Iwate has had a bear warning in force since 22 April 2026 after sightings ran far above the usual level, Aomori's warning runs from 20 April to 30 November 2026, and Akita's advisory covers October. Things to do in Hakkoda
Hakkoda is a range of volcanic peaks south of Aomori city with a handful of old onsen inns on its flanks and no village in the usual sense. Sukayu Onsen, on the road up from Aomori, is the best known. The Heibonsha gazetteer records a tale that a hunter from Yokouchi found the spring by following a wounded deer, which is why it was first called Shika-no-yu, and it quotes a Meiji-era survey that dismisses the story as fanciful.
The Hakkoda Ropeway is the lift that matters here. It stops in winds of 25 metres a second or more and in bad weather, and it closes for maintenance from 8 to 20 November 2026 and from 25 to 31 May 2027. In winter the JR bus from Aomori Station reaches the ropeway in about 80 minutes and turns at Sukayu, 15 minutes farther on.
Aomori Prefecture says black bears wake from hibernation in early spring and forage from about May to November, and its warning for 2026 runs from 20 April to 30 November, so spring tourers and summer hikers should carry a bell, talk as they walk and check the Kuma Log Aomori map.
Worth knowing
- Check the ropeway's operation notice before you leave Aomori, since strong wind stops it often in midwinter.
- Book a guide for anything beyond the marked courses from the top station.

When should you ride Zao and Hakkoda for the snow monsters?
February is the month. Zao Ropeway puts its snow monsters at full size then, on a big ticketed mountain above a sulphur onsen village. Hakkoda gives one ropeway and two ungroomed courses through its own fir groves, with tour routes opening from early March.

How do you stay safe on a cycling trip in Japan?
Heat sends far more people to hospital than anything with teeth, so the heatstroke alert is the first thing to read on a summer morning. After that come hornets and bears on forest roads, dark tunnels, typhoons from August, and what to do when the ground shakes near the sea.
