Aomori suits skiers bound for the Hakkoda Ropeway who want a city base with seafood markets and the winter bus at the station. The trade-off is the ride itself, about 80 minutes each way to the ropeway in snow.

Things to do in Aomori
Aomori grew from a fishing village called Uto, which the Hirosaki domain renamed Aomori in 1624 and built up as its port. The Tohoku Shinkansen stops at Shin-Aomori on the edge of the city, and a short local train connects it with Aomori Station in the centre. The fastest morning journey from Tokyo took 3 hours 46 minutes to Aomori Station on 16 October 2026.
For skiers the city's job is the JR bus to Hakkoda. In winter it runs from Aomori Station to the Hakkoda Ropeway in about 80 minutes for ¥1,290, and it goes no farther than Sukayu Onsen because the road beyond is closed. On a day off, the Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse is the city's hall for the summer Nebuta festival, and Sannai-Maruyama is part of the Jomon sites listed as World Heritage.
Worth knowing
- Aomori Prefecture keeps a bear warning in force from 20 April to 30 November 2026 and asks walkers outside town to carry a bell and check the Kuma Log Aomori map.
- Change to the local train at Shin-Aomori for the city centre, since the shinkansen does not run into Aomori Station.
