The ropeway climbs from the base station to Sancho Koen station in about ten minutes. Cars leave every 15 to 20 minutes from 9:00. At the top the Hakkoda Gold Line, a promenade through the summit wetland, takes about an hour to an hour and a half round trip.
Green season here runs from snowmelt in late June until the first snow. Autumn is the busiest time: the leaves turn from late September and the cabins peak around 10 October, when queues reach 90 minutes. Hikers set off from the summit station, but no trail leads back down to the base station, so plan a route that ends at a road. Fill in the climbing plan form at the summit station. In 2026 the prefecture's special bear warning closed the Hakkoda trails until 31 July after a bear attacked a man in late June.
Hakkoda is an active volcano, and JMA has kept it at alert level 1 since it started using levels there in 2019. JMA's leaflet maps a danger zone of about 1 km around the Jigokunuma crater and about 2 to 3 km around the Odake crater for larger eruptions. Aomori City and Towada City set the actual closures at each level.
Worth knowing
- Go early on weekdays in mid-October. Queues at the base station can reach 90 minutes around the foliage peak.
- Fit winter tyres if you drive up between November and April, which the operator asks of every driver.
