Tsuta Onsen Ryokan
¥28,200 a night
Tsuta stands near the head of the Oirase Gorge, and records place a bathing hut on this spot by 1147. The main building dates from 1918 and keeps the steps and level changes of an old house. Both baths are source-fed from underneath, so the water reaches you without ever touching the air.
Kyuan-no-yu is the old mixed bath, rebuilt in 1990, and today it alternates by sex: women from 10:00 to 12:00 and 21:30 to 9:00, men from 13:00 to 21:00. Senkyo-no-yu has a separate side for men and women under a 12-metre timber roof. A private bath costs ¥4,000 for 50 minutes and is booked at the front desk on the day.
The walk to Tsuta-numa and the six other ponds starts at the door, and the inn puts peak colour around 20 October. Oirase is 20 minutes by car and the Hakkoda Ropeway about 40. The inn expects the first snow in late October.
