Sukayu Onsen Ryokan
¥11,495 a night
Sukayu sits alone at about 900 metres on the west flank of the Hakkoda range, where winter snow piles past five metres. In 1954 it became the first spa in Japan named a National Health Resort Hot Spring. The draw is the Hiba Sennin-buro, a 160-tatami hall built entirely of Aomori hiba cypress with no pillar in the middle, where four different acidic sulphur sources feed one room.
The big bath is mixed. Women have it to themselves from 8:00 to 9:00 and again from 20:00 to 21:00 every day, and the small Tama-no-yu bath next door stays split by sex all day with water of the same type. The shop rents bathing wraps called yuami-gi to men and women for ¥500 and sells a women's wrap for ¥1,300. Only the inn's own wraps go in the water, so leave yours in the bag.
The rooms split in two. The ryokan wing has old six- and eight-mat Japanese rooms with an engawa and a 2019 block of twins with beds and a private toilet. The toji wing keeps the long-stay layout, with shared toilets, a kitchen with gas rings and microwaves, and futons you lay out yourself. Dinner is a set tray of Aomori food, and the soba shop Kimen-an serves lunch until 16:30.
For the ropeway, ride the JR bus back down the hill: Hakkoda Ropeway's own page puts Sukayu to the base at about 15 minutes for ¥460. Sukayu's guides run backcountry ski and snowboard tours from 19 December 2026 to 6 May 2027 at ¥7,000 for a full day. Jalan's listing names a drying room among the inn's facilities.
