Hakkoda Hotel
¥39,600 a night
Sukayu Onsen's owners opened this hotel in 1991 about 15 minutes' walk from the old inn. It is a cluster of six wooden buildings around a log main hall, built of Canadian red cedar and Oregon pine, and the hotel calls it one of the largest Western-style timber buildings in Japan. Works by the woodblock artist Munakata Shiko, who used to take long cures at Sukayu, hang through the halls. There are 45 rooms, mostly twins, plus eight maisonettes and four suites.
Dinner is the reason to pay the difference. MeDeau serves French cooking built on Aomori produce and asks for smart casual dress, while Shakomizu does kaiseki and lets you come down in your yukata. The hotel says it cannot cater for vegan or vegetarian guests. The bar opens from 20:00 to 22:30.
The hotel's own bath is hiba-scented with a sauna and cold plunge. Guests also bathe free at Sukayu's Sennin-buro, and a scheduled hotel bus runs the two minutes there with towels waiting at the other end. Remember the women-only hours there are 8:00 to 9:00 and 20:00 to 21:00.
