Hotel Jogakura
¥16,300 a night
Jogakura is a timber-lined mountain hotel in beech forest at 880 metres near the Jogakura Bridge, about 2 kilometres from Sukayu. Its spring is a clear, gentle chloride water at 50.2°C, a soft change from Sukayu's acid. The open-air baths run straight from the source beside a mountain stream all year, which the hotel says is rare in Hakkoda; the indoor baths are topped up, heated and recirculated, with a mist sauna and a cold bath of local spring water.
Of the Hakkoda inns, this one leans hardest toward skiers. The hotel has a boot drying room, a skiers' locker room and a Salomon rental corner, and on tour days a free bus leaves at 8:45 for the ropeway base. Its backcountry tours are led by a guide with more than 30 years on Hakkoda and cost ¥6,600 a day or ¥4,400 a half day, plus ¥500 insurance; sign up at the tour desk by 18:00 the night before.
The 32 rooms are timber-panelled, and the Comfort Twin and larger rooms have their own hiba bath of onsen water. The hotel has no lift, so ask for a ground-floor room if stairs are hard. Dinner is kaiseki in the restaurant, and on a storm day you can climb the bouldering wall indoors.
Highlights
