Hachimantai suits skiers and bathers who want two quieter ski areas and milky sulphur springs under Mt. Iwate, with APPI on the same bus line. The trade-off is that the road over the high plateau shuts for the whole winter.

Road closure
The Hachimantai Jukai Line stays shut between Horaikyo and the Matsukawa gate
Iwate Prefecture closed the Jukai Line, prefectural road 318, from Horaikyo to the Matsukawa gate at 17:00 on 3 July 2024 after a landslide caved the road in, and it lists the closure as indefinite. The Hachimantai city tourism association expects the road to reopen after the snow melts in spring 2027. The open section from Horaikyo up to the Akita border closes every night from 17:00 on 16 October to 08:30 on 4 November 2026. Last winter Iwate shut the whole line from Kitanomata to Matsukawa Onsen from 4 November 2025 to 24 April 2026.

The Hachimantai Aspite Line closes every night until 4 November
Iwate closes the Aspite Line, prefectural road 23, from Midorigaoka to Mikaeri Pass on the Akita border every night from 17:00 on 16 October to 08:30 on 4 November 2026, since ice and snow can settle on the road overnight. Akita closes its side the same way, and a sudden change in the weather can shut the road in daytime too. Last winter the Iwate side closed from 17:00 on 4 November 2025 to 10:00 on 15 April 2026. The prefecture has yet to post its winter dates for 2026/27.

Things to do in Hachimantai
Hachimantai city was formed in 2005 from the towns of Ashiro and Nishine and the village of Matsuo, and it runs from the APPI plateau in the north to the foot of Mt. Iwate in the south. The Hachimantai Aspite Line, about 27 km over the plateau into Akita, closes to traffic in winter and reopens in April between walls of snow. Matsuo village once held a sulphur mine that produced a third of Japan's sulphur in the 1960s before it closed in 1972.
Hachimantai Resort has two ski areas. Panorama is the gentle one, with seven courses and 64 percent of them rated beginner, and Shimokura is steeper, with seven courses, three tree-run areas and 30 percent rated advanced. A bus links APPI, Shimokura and Panorama, so a week here can cover all three.
Matsukawa Onsen sits in the forest below the plateau, where two inns, Matsukawa-so and Kyoun-so, fill their baths with milky sulphur water. Japan's first commercial geothermal power station stands just upstream, and a dye workshop in the hot-spring district fixes colour in scarves and cloth with the volcanic steam. Both inns take day bathers.
Worth knowing
- Iwate Prefecture recorded about six times its usual number of bear sightings from January to March 2026, so read its bear page before any snowshoe walk or ski tour outside the ski area boundaries.
- Plan Matsukawa Onsen as an overnight in deep winter. The plateau roads above it stay closed until April.
