Things to do in Shuzenji
Shuzenji grew up around Shuzen-ji, the temple the town says Kukai founded in 807, and its ryokan line the river below it in a narrow green valley in the middle of Izu. The tourism association calls it one of the oldest hot spring towns on the peninsula. In the evening the Bamboo Grove Path along the river stays lit until 23:00, and Hako-yu takes day bathers for ¥700 until 21:00.
For riders the draw sits on the hill to the north-east: the Japan Cycle Sports Center, with a 5 km road circuit, the Izu MTB course and the Izu Velodrome, the 250 m wooden track that hosted Olympic track cycling. The circuit and MTB course close from 1 July to 7 December 2026 while the centre hosts the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games and Asian Para Games, and velodrome visits stop until further notice. Through the winter the park opens 10:00 to 16:00 and closes on Wednesdays and Thursdays, except from 25 December to 3 January, and it shuts for maintenance from 1 to 5 February 2027.
Shuzenji is also the end of the Izuhakone Railway from Mishima, which makes it the easy rail way into central Izu. From the station a bus runs about 10 minutes up to the onsen. The Amagi road south toward Kawazu and Shimoda starts here, and so does the climb west toward Toi and the west coast.
