Zenpuutei Nanaban
禅風亭なゝ番34°58′ N 138°56′ ESoba¥
Nanaban suits anyone in Shuzenji who wants soba with a whole root of fresh wasabi to grate at the table, and the trade-off is a queue that forms by 11:00 even on weekdays.
What to order
- Zendera soba with a whole wasabi root
Zendera soba is Nanaban's claim to fame, and the shop calls itself the original. One tray holds cold soba alongside chilled grated yam soba with a raw egg, mountain vegetables, sesame to grind into the dipping sauce and a stick of fresh Amagi wasabi with its leaves on. A Retty reviewer in August 2025 paid ¥1,430 and grated the wasabi from the stem end as the staff showed. You keep what you do not use, and the shop hands over a bag to carry it home.
The room has an irori hearth and sunken kotatsu tables, and it opens at 10:00, earlier than most soba shops in town. That early start makes it the obvious lunch after a morning loop of the Shuzenji roads.
Worth knowing
- Bring cash.
- The car park has nine spaces on the west side and five across the road, numbered in kanji.
