Arai Ryokan

Arai Ryokan has stood on the Katsura River in Shuzenji since the Meiji era, and in 1998 the state registered 15 of its buildings as tangible cultural properties. Its third owner, Aihara Mokuho, hosted painters such as Yasuda Yukihiko and Yokoyama Taikan. Yokoyama's old studio now holds the Ginza Shoko Kanazawa Museum Shuzenji.
Every bath in the inn runs on free-flowing Shuzenji water. The Tenpyo Daiyokudo of 1934 looks like a temple hall and has no showers or taps. Two private baths called Suiren and Hisui opened in 2014 on the site of older ones, and a semi-outdoor bath named Yukihana was added to the Hana wing in 2023.
The inn has 31 Japanese rooms, and the 2023 refit put double glazing into most of them to keep out the cold. Shuzenji Station is seven or eight minutes away by taxi or bus. Arai also runs a separate phone line in English, Chinese, Korean and Thai.
