Asaba began in 1484 as a temple lodging run by an ancestor of the family that still owns it. Its ten rooms look onto either the garden or the pond, where a Noh stage called Gekkeiden floats; the family moved it here from Tokyo in the late Meiji period. For about 40 years the inn has staged Noh, kyogen, shinnai and dance on it under the name Shuzenji Geijutsu Kiko.
Each room has its own bath on free-flowing Shuzenji water, and the Villa Tenko adds a private outdoor one. The shared outdoor bath sits in the bamboo. Dinner comes to your room, and you can add abalone, spiny lobster or charcoal-grilled wagyu to the set course. Relais & Châteaux lists the inn and says it takes children from seven.
There is no pick-up from Shuzenji Station, which the inn puts seven minutes away by taxi. The salon serves drinks from 6:00 to 11:30 and again from 14:30 to 23:00.
