The museum opened in July 1986 beside Oyamazumi Shrine as a museum of contemporary nihonga (Japanese-style painting). Its gabled roof and thick columns stand out on the approach, and the walls inside are lined with washi paper. Most of the collection is early work from the 1970s to the 2000s by painters who now lead the field, and temporary shows bring in younger artists.
A room added for the tenth anniversary holds the work of Toshio Tabuchi, with sketches and studies beside the finished paintings. Adults pay ¥520, students ¥260 and visitors under 18 nothing.
