The Kurushima Kaikyo Observatory suits riders at the Imabari end who want a close look at the bridge and the tide race, and the trade-off is an 18:00 closing that comes an hour earlier in winter.

The observatory stands in Itoyama Park about 400 metres from where the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge leaves Shikoku. The bridge runs 4,105 metres to Oshima and was the world's first triple-tower suspension bridge. From the terraces you watch ships pass beneath it while the strait's currents churn below.
Inside, displays explain the tides and the long maritime history of the strait, and a small shop sells drinks and Shimanami goods. Entry is free. Halfway across the bridge, a lift drops from the cycle path to the small island of Umashima.
Many riders have started or finished here, because the Imabari Itoyama rental terminal at Sunrise Itoyama sits next to the park. Kirosan on Oshima shows the same bridge from above on the far side of the strait.
Worth knowing
- The Imabari Itoyama terminal keeps the same 8:00 to 19:00 hours as Imabari Station from March to November and closes at 18:00 in winter.
- Sunrise Itoyama next door closed for renovation from 15 September 2026, and Imabari city expects it back around winter 2027/28. The city's project covers the land around the building too, so phone the observatory before you go to check it is open.
