Things to do in Akakura Onsen
Akakura Onsen climbs the eastern slope of Mt. Myoko at about 800 metres, and inns in the village date its spring to 1816. The water comes down a pipeline from Kita-Jigokudani high on the volcano, and the inns run it free-flowing through their baths. Shin-Akakura sits just below at the foot of Akakura Kanko Resort, with Akakura Kanko Hotel up on the slope at 1,000 metres.
The Akakura Onsen ski area rises straight off the top of the main street, and Akakura Kanko Resort shares its border. Lodges on the main street put the lifts at a four- or five-minute walk, and a shuttle stop for Akakura Kanko sits at the main junction. In the 2025/26 season the Mt. Myoko shuttle ran from 20 December to 22 March at ¥1,000 a ride, linking Akakura with Ikenotaira and Suginohara.
The main street is where Myoko eats after dark. Shibata has served big Japanese dinners with an English menu for decades, and down in Shin-Akakura the izakaya Pontaro pours Niigata jizake below the lifts. On a peak Saturday, book ahead or take the dinner plan at your inn.
