Akakura Hotel
¥24,200 a night
Akakura Hotel says it has been running for 200 years, which makes it one of the oldest houses in Akakura Onsen. It sits at about 800 metres in the middle of the village, a short walk from the bars and the Akakura Onsen ski area.
The inn draws its water from 24 outlets of the Akakura source on Mt. Myoko and runs every bath as kake-nagashi, which means the water flows through once and is never recirculated. There are three public baths with an outdoor one and a sauna. A private bath costs ¥2,000 an hour on reservation, and the main baths stay open from 05:00 to midnight.
Dinner is a Japanese and Western kaiseki built around local produce. The car park holds about 50 cars on a first-come basis, and in a heavy week it fills, so arrive early or come by bus.
