Kogane no Yu is the free outdoor bath at Tsubame Onsen with separate pools for men and women, and it suits walkers on Mt. Myoko from spring to autumn who want milky sulphur water in the open air; it is closed in winter.
Know before you bathe
There is no attendant, so wash with a scoop of water before you get in and take everything home with you.
Getting there
A 10-minute walk from the Tsubame Onsen car park.
The pools sit ten minutes above the village car park, and Myoko Tourism says the fresh green of early summer and the autumn colour bring crowds. Locals have long bathed here for nerve pain, rheumatism, skin trouble and stomach complaints.
Expect slush on the path when the bath first opens in spring; the tourism office says rubber boots are essential then. On Monday and Friday mornings the pools are drained and cleaned.
Worth knowing
- Come on a weekday morning outside Monday and Friday for the emptiest pools.
