Kounkaku
¥66,000 a night
Kounkaku began in the middle of the Edo period as the falconry lodge of the Sakakibara lords of the Takada domain and later became an inn. Most of the old buildings came down in 2012. The family kept one old main bath called Korin-no-yu and built the rental around it.
Only one group stays at a time. The bath is the size of an eight-mat room and fills with free-flowing water from Kita-Jigokudani at a source temperature of 50.2°C, and it is drained and cleaned before each booking.
There are no meals, but the full kitchen lets you shop in Akakura and cook, and the family can book dinner for you at an inn nearby. Myoko Tourism lists the whole house from ¥66,000 a night for one or two people.
