What is a rinko bag, and which one do you need for Japan's trains?
A rinko bag is the soft cover that turns a bike into luggage for Japan's trains. JR wants every part inside it and the whole bag within 250 cm and 30 kg, and a shop like Y's Road in Ueno will match one to your frame.

A rinko bag (輪行袋, rinkōbukuro) is a soft bike cover that lets you carry a bicycle onto a Japanese train as hand luggage. Rinko means travelling with your bike by rail, and the railways set one condition for it. The bike comes apart or folds, and every part goes inside a dedicated bag, wheels and saddle included. JR's limits are 250 cm for the bag's length, width and height added together, 2 metres on the longest side and 30 kg. Most road and gravel riders want a bag that takes the frame with both wheels off. Y's Road Ueno Honkan in Tokyo stocks bags for road, cross and mountain bikes and will match one to your frame.
We read the luggage rules of JR West, JR Central and JR East, Y's Road's own rinko column of 9 October 2026 and our files for the stations riders use most. Bag sizes vary by maker and model, so this guide tells you how to measure your own and leaves the catalogue figures to the shop.
What does JR require of a rinko bag?
JR West puts it plainly: a sports bike must be dismantled and carried in a dedicated bag, and a folding bike must be folded and bagged (JR West). JR East asks for the same, with the seat and wheels inside. Y's Road's column adds the practical warning: keep every part inside the bag, and never drape a bag over a whole bike and roll it along on its wheels.
Each passenger may carry two items free on JR, each within the 250 cm, 2 m and 30 kg limits. JR East, JR Central and JR West charge no fee for a rinko bag inside those limits. On the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen, JR Central's oversized-baggage rule exempts bicycles, though you still book the seat with the space behind it if the bag needs that space. Our guide to bikes on the Shinkansen has the line-by-line detail.
Which kind of rinko bag should you buy?
Pick the design by the bike and the trains you will ride. Shops in Japan sell the bags below, and Y's Road's column sorts them by priority, from the lightest models to the ones that protect a frame best.
| Design | How the bike goes in | Suits | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Both wheels off, tall shape (縦型, tategata) | Frame stands on end with a wheel strapped either side, so the bag is tall and narrow | Road and gravel bikes on crowded trains | Needs an end fitting to protect the rear derailleur |
| Both wheels off, long shape (横型, yokogata) | Frame stays level with a wheel strapped either side, so the bag is long and low | Riders who want the simplest pack | Takes more floor than the tall shape |
| Front wheel only | Front wheel off and strapped to the frame, rear wheel stays in | Bikes whose rear wheel is slow to remove | The packed bag is bigger, so measure it against 250 cm |
| Folding-bike bag | Bike folded and dropped into a fitted sack | Brompton, DAHON, Tyrell and other folders | Fits only the folded shape it was cut for |
The tall shape sets the bike on a smaller patch of floor, which counts on a train where you stand beside it in the vestibule. The long shape sits lower and wider. A front-wheel-only bag still meets JR's rule as long as the whole bike sits inside the bag, though it uses more space.
What else do you need with the bag?
An end fitting (エンド金具, endo kanagu) screws into the empty rear dropouts. It keeps the frame off the derailleur when the bike stands on its end. A disc-brake bike needs a pad spacer in each caliper so the pads cannot close with the wheel out, and a cover for each rotor. Y's Road's Ueno column lists both alongside its bags. Add straps to bind the wheels to the frame, and a shoulder strap for the stations where stairs stand between you and the platform.
How big is a packed rinko bag against the 250 cm limit?
Measure your own, because it depends on the frame size and the bag. Pack the bike at home, stand the bag up and measure its length, width and height, then add the three. Under 250 cm and under 2 metres on the longest side, it meets JR's limit. Weigh it as well, since 30 kg is the limit for each item.
Some numbers matter beyond the train:
- Yamato's ordinary takkyubin parcel service takes a bike only boxed, within 200 cm and 30 kg, and refuses a bike in a soft bag (Yamato).
- On the Shimanami Kaido, Sagawa sells a bike box for ¥6,600 in 2026 that takes a packed bike up to 260 cm, ordered a week ahead (Sagawa Cycling Without Baggage).
Flying is another set of rules. Ride Okinawa's guide to bringing your bike to Okinawa compares the size and weight limits of the domestic airlines into Naha, and the same airlines fly to the hub's airports.
Where can you buy a rinko bag in Japan?
At a sports-bike shop, and Y's Road is the big chain. Y's Road Ueno Honkan fills two floors a short walk from Ueno and Okachimachi stations. Its column of 9 October 2026 lists rinko bags for road, cross and mountain bikes along with the end fittings and spacers, and its staff match a bag to your frame. Bring the bike's axle type and brake type so they can pick the right parts. On Sundays the shop runs a rinko session for folding bikes for up to three people. You ride from the shop to Ueno Station, fold and bag the bike for one stop to Okachimachi and ride back, for ¥350 in 2026 including the fare. Y's Road's shop list finds a branch nearer your start.
Where do you pack the bike at the station?
Outside the ticket gates, on a wide bit of concourse away from the flow. None of the big stations in our files mark a bagging area. At Tokyo Station, JR East and JR Central both leave it to you, so pack before you reach the gates. At Onomichi, the start of the Shimanami Kaido, riders pack and unpack outside the step-free South Gate. Y's Road asks riders to keep stations passable while they work and to think of the people around them on the train.
The empty bag folds small enough to ride along on the bike. A box or a hard case needs storing. Onomichi Station has more than 100 coin lockers, three of them extra-large at ¥1,000 a day in 2026. JR East Logistics holds a bike box for up to 30 days at its Tokyo and Ueno counters for ¥2,000 a day.
On JR East's B.B.BASE cycle train the bike rides whole in a rack, though JR East still asks riders to bring a bag in case the rack refuses the bike.
Quick answers
What is a rinko bag?
A rinko bag is a dedicated bike bag that lets you take a bicycle on a Japanese train as hand luggage. The bike comes apart or folds, and every part goes inside the bag.
What size can a rinko bag be on JR trains?
A rinko bag on JR trains can measure up to 250 cm in length, width and height added together, with no side over 2 metres and a weight up to 30 kg. Each passenger may carry two such items free.
Can I use a rinko bag with the rear wheel still on?
Yes, if the whole bike sits inside the bag. A front-wheel-only rinko bag meets JR's rule when nothing sticks out, though the packed bag is bigger than a wheels-off one.
Where can I buy a rinko bag in Tokyo?
Y's Road Ueno Honkan, near Ueno and Okachimachi stations, stocks rinko bags for road, cross and mountain bikes in 2026, along with the end fittings and disc-brake spacers that go with them.
Can Yamato ship a bike in a rinko bag?
No. Yamato's takkyubin takes a bicycle only when it is boxed, within 200 cm and 30 kg, and refuses a bike packed in a soft bag.

How do you send skis, boards and bikes ahead in Japan?
Hand a covered ski or board bag to Yamato two days before you ride and it waits at the resort desk. A bike goes only boxed, within 200 cm and 30 kg, and Sagawa's web booking stays down after its September 2026 breach.

What are Japan's cycling rules and fines in 2026?
