Tokyo Station is where the Shinkansen to Nagano, Niigata, Tohoku and Shin-Osaka all begin, with JR East's trains and JR Central's under one roof. Allow time to cross between the two halves with a board bag.

JR East's Shinkansen for Nagano, Niigata and Tohoku left from platforms 20 to 23 in our October 2026 timetable checks. JR Central's Tokaido Shinkansen leaves from its own platforms, which were 14 to 16 in the same checks. JR East's station page lists lifts and escalators on step-free routes from the gates to every platform. Riders who need help can use a dedicated waiting room at the Marunouchi South Exit.
Tickets booked on JR East's Eki-net can be picked up at JR East's machines and ticket offices and at JR Central's reserved-seat machines. JR Central's staffed windows cannot hand them over, so a rider heading for the Tokaido side should collect at a machine.
Worth knowing
- Pack the bike into its bag before you reach the gates, since neither railway marks a bagging spot inside.
- Collect Eki-net tickets at a machine if you are boarding the Tokaido Shinkansen.

What is a rinko bag, and which one do you need for Japan's trains?
A rinko bag is the soft cover that turns a bike into luggage for Japan's trains. JR wants every part inside it and the whole bag within 250 cm and 30 kg, and a shop like Y's Road in Ueno will match one to your frame.

Where can you ski on a day trip from Tokyo?
In winter the Shinkansen stops inside GALA Yuzawa's base building. Kagura has the biggest terrain within reach of Echigo-Yuzawa, and Mt.T in Minakami has the steepest, an hour from Tokyo plus a bus.
