Can you take a bike on the Shinkansen?
Every Shinkansen takes a bike packed as rinko, wheels off and fully bagged, up to 250 cm and 30 kg. West of Tokyo you should book the seat with the space behind it, and north of Tokyo there is nothing to book.

Yes. Every Shinkansen line takes a bike as long as it travels as rinko (輪行): taken apart or folded, with every part inside a dedicated bike bag. The bag has to stay within 250 cm in length, width and height added together, with no side over 2 metres and a weight of 30 kg or less, and each passenger may carry two such items free. On the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, book a seat with an oversized-baggage area so the bag can ride in the space behind the last row. On JR East's lines to Tohoku, Niigata and Nagano there is no luggage booking at all.
We read the luggage pages of JR Central, JR West and JR East and our own files for every Shinkansen line in October 2026. The rules below are each railway's published rules for 2026.
Which Shinkansen lines need a booking for a bike bag?
The line decides it, so check which railway runs your train.
| Line | Railway | Booking for a big bag | Where a bike bag rides | Cost of the booking | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tokaido (Tokyo to Shin-Osaka) | JR Central | Seat with an oversized-baggage area for bags over 160 cm | Behind the last row of some cars | Same as any reserved seat | A Kodama has 17 such seats, and 12 of them are in the Green cars |
| Sanyo (Shin-Osaka to Hakata) | JR West | Same rule as the Tokaido | Behind the last row of some cars | Same as any reserved seat | Only the Kodama stops at Shin-Onomichi |
| Kyushu (Hakata to Kagoshima-Chuo) | JR Kyushu | Same rule as the Tokaido | Behind the last row of some cars | Same as any reserved seat | Bookings open only one month ahead |
| Tohoku, Yamagata, Akita | JR East | None | At your feet or in a luggage area | Nothing to book | Luggage areas fill first come, first served |
| Joetsu (Tokyo to Niigata) | JR East | None | At your feet or in a luggage area | Nothing to book | The all-stops Tanigawa adds 20 minutes or more |
| Hokuriku (Tokyo to Tsuruga) | JR East, then JR West | None | At your feet or in a luggage area | Nothing to book | Only the Hakutaka stops at Iiyama and Joetsu-Myoko |
Skipping the booking costs ¥1,000. On the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu lines, a passenger who boards with a bag over 160 cm and no booking pays that carry-on fee on board. The conductor then puts the bag where it fits, and on a full train that can mean waiting for a later one (JR Central).
Does the 160 cm rule apply to bicycles?
No. Book the seat anyway. JR Central's page says the oversized-baggage rule does not cover sports equipment such as bicycles, so a bike bag over 160 cm draws no ¥1,000 charge. The same page says only passengers holding a seat with an oversized-baggage area may use the space behind the last row. JR Central sizes its overhead racks for bags up to 160 cm, about 42 cm deep, and the space at your feet for about 120 cm. A packed bike that will not go on the rack needs the back-row space, and only the booking guarantees it. JR Central adds that sports gear longer than the length limit can still ride if it stands upright in its bag or case.
Where are the oversized-baggage seats on the Tokaido Shinkansen?
They are the last row of some cars. On a 16-car Nozomi, JR Central puts five in each of ordinary cars 3 to 6 and 12 to 16, and four in each of Green cars 8 to 10, which makes 57 a train. A Hikari carries 42, with 30 in ordinary cars. The Kodama has 17, and only five of those are in ordinary cars, so a rider on a budget books early or pays for Green.
Ten more seats on a Nozomi come with a lockable oversized-baggage compartment, and each compartment takes one item up to 80 by 60 by 40 cm. A bagged road bike is longer than that, so the back-row seat is the one to book. Choose "seat with oversized baggage area" at a JR ticket office, at a reserved-seat machine, or online through smartEX, JR-WEST Online Train Reservation or JR-KYUSHU Train Reservation. Bookings open a month ahead, and Japan Rail Pass holders can book through JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation.
How does JR East treat a bike bag?
JR East runs no oversized-baggage booking on any of its Shinkansen. Each passenger carries two items free, each up to 250 cm and 30 kg, and a bike has to be taken apart or folded with every part in the bag, wheels and seat included. Some cars have luggage areas, which fill in the order people board. A bagged bike otherwise goes at your feet, and JR East asks riders to keep heavy or awkward bags off the overhead racks (JR East luggage rules). Get to the platform early on a ski-season weekend, when board bags compete for the same corners.
How long does it take to bag a bike for the train?
No railway publishes a time for it. Pack and unpack the bike at home before the trip, because the first try on a busy concourse runs slowest, and add your own time at both ends of every train you plan. Leave more margin for a change of trains, since a full bike bag slows you down on stairs and in crowds.
Where do you bag a bike at the station?
Outside the ticket gates, and out of the flow of people. Neither JR East nor JR Central marks a spot for bagging a bike at Tokyo Station, and JR West marks none at Shin-Osaka or Onomichi. Tokyo puts JR East's Shinkansen and JR Central's Tokaido line under one roof, with lifts on the step-free routes to every platform. Allow time to walk between the two halves with a full bag. Shin-Osaka has lifts from the central entrance to every Shinkansen platform. At Onomichi, both gates are step-free from the street, and platform 1 for Mihara and Hiroshima is level with the South Gate.
The empty box or hard case needs a home while you ride. JR East Logistics keeps items for up to 30 days at its counters in Tokyo and Ueno stations, and a bike box over 200 cm counts as large at ¥2,000 a day in 2026.
Can you take a bike on a train without bagging it?
On JR East's B.B.BASE you can. This cycle train leaves Ryogoku in Tokyo for the Boso Peninsula and Lake Teganuma, and the bike rides whole in a rack inside the car beside your reserved seat. It runs on set days only. On 11 October 2026 JR East's calendar listed B.B.BASE Teganuma on 17 October as the last run of the year, with nothing in November, and typhoon damage had already cancelled the 26 September and 10 October trains (B.B.BASE). The racks refuse bikes with mudguards, block-pattern tyres or stands that wrap the rear wheel, and JR East asks every rider to bring a bike bag anyway.
WILLER EXPRESS refuses every bicycle on its night buses, folding bikes included, so the overnight bus drops out of a bike trip (WILLER).
Which trains suit a rider heading for the big routes?
For the Shimanami Kaido, take the Sanyo Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Fukuyama, 61 minutes on Nozomi 101 in the 2026 timetable, and change to the Sanyo Line for Onomichi Station by the ferry piers. For Lake Biwa, only the Hikari and Kodama stop at Maibara, and the Hikari took 33 minutes from Shin-Osaka. North of Tokyo the JR East rule makes life simpler, and the Hokuriku Shinkansen gets you to Nagano in 77 minutes on the fastest Kagayaki with nothing to book for the bike.
Quick answers
Do I need to reserve a seat for my bike on the Shinkansen?
On the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen, book a seat with an oversized-baggage area so a bike bag can ride behind the last row. JR Central exempts bicycles from the ¥1,000 charge, yet only booked passengers may use that space. JR East's Shinkansen have no luggage booking.
What size bike bag can go on the Shinkansen?
A bike bag on the Shinkansen can measure up to 250 cm in length, width and height added together, with no side over 2 metres and a weight up to 30 kg. Anything bigger stays off the train.
Can I take an unbagged bike on the Shinkansen?
No. Every Shinkansen needs the bike taken apart or folded with every part inside a dedicated bag. JR East's B.B.BASE cycle train from Ryogoku carries bikes whole on its set days.
How much does the oversized-baggage seat on the Tokaido Shinkansen cost?
A seat with an oversized-baggage area on the Tokaido Shinkansen costs the same as any reserved seat in that class in 2026. Boarding with a bag over 160 cm and no booking costs a ¥1,000 carry-on fee.
How many oversized-baggage seats does a Kodama have?
A 16-car Kodama on the Tokaido Shinkansen has 17 seats with an oversized-baggage area, 12 in the Green cars and 5 in ordinary cars, according to JR Central in 2026.

What is a rinko bag, and which one do you need for Japan's trains?
A rinko bag is the soft cover that turns a bike into luggage for Japan's trains. JR wants every part inside it and the whole bag within 250 cm and 30 kg, and a shop like Y's Road in Ueno will match one to your frame.

How do you send skis, boards and bikes ahead in Japan?
Hand a covered ski or board bag to Yamato two days before you ride and it waits at the resort desk. A bike goes only boxed, within 200 cm and 30 kg, and Sagawa's web booking stays down after its September 2026 breach.

How long does it take to cycle the Shimanami Kaido?
Most riders cross from Onomichi to Imabari in one full day. Split it with a night on Ikuchijima or Omishima if you want the islands, or take a sports e-bike and ride it in a morning, as long as it goes back before the terminal closes.
