Rinko at Onomichi Station
尾道駅34°24′ N 133°12′ ERinko
Onomichi Station sits by the port where the Shimanami Kaido begins, and riders arrive on the Sanyo Line. The Shinkansen stops at Shin-Onomichi instead, so plan a change at Fukuyama.
Services
| Service | Time | How often | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sanyo Line platformsJR West | – | – | Platform 1 is level with the South Gate. Platforms 2 and 3 are reached by lift. |
JR West rebuilt the station in 2019, and its barrier-free listing shows both gates step-free from the street. Trains for Mihara and Hiroshima use platform 1, level with the South Gate. Trains for Fukuyama and Okayama use platform 2, and a lift serves it and platform 3. The staffed ticket office at the South Gate opens from 08:00 to 20:00.
Shimanami Japan counts more than 100 coin lockers beside the main gates, at ¥400, ¥600 and ¥800 a day, plus three extra-large lockers at ¥1,000. Bags can stay up to 72 hours, and Suica, PASMO or cash all work. The Yamato office in the shopping arcade holds bags for ¥500 a piece.
JR West's rule for the train is simple. Take the bike apart, put every part inside a dedicated bag, and keep it within 250 cm and 30 kg.
Worth knowing
- Change from the Shinkansen to the Sanyo Line at Fukuyama to arrive at Onomichi Station itself.
- Leave the empty bike bag in a station locker if you plan to ride back to Onomichi.

Do you still need cash in Japan?
Cards and a tap-to-pay travel card cover most of a trip to Japan, and plenty of village baths, soba counters, temple gates and bike-hire desks still want yen. This guide sets out what to carry and how tax-free shopping changes on 1 November 2026.

How do you send skis, boards and bikes ahead in Japan?
Hand a covered ski or board bag to Yamato two days before you ride and it waits at the resort desk. A bike goes only boxed, within 200 cm and 30 kg, and Sagawa's web booking stays down after its September 2026 breach.

How long does it take to cycle the Shimanami Kaido?
Most riders cross from Onomichi to Imabari in one full day. Split it with a night on Ikuchijima or Omishima if you want the islands, or take a sports e-bike and ride it in a morning, as long as it goes back before the terminal closes.
