Miharashi-tei
¥12,000 a night
Ishii Yoichi, who made his money in wooden lunch boxes, built this cliff-edge villa in 1921, one of the hilltop teahouse villas that Onomichi's merchants called saen. It worked as an inn after the war and then stood empty for nearly 30 years. The Onomichi Akiya Saisei Project restored it from 2015 and opened it as a guesthouse in spring 2016, and it is a registered cultural property.
Reaching it means climbing roughly 300 steps from the sea toward Senko-ji, which rules out a bike and heavy luggage. Phone bookings go through 0848-23-3864 between 15:00 and 22:00. Children aged five and under cannot stay.
