The Aomori Gyosai Center suits anyone with a morning in Aomori who wants to build a rice bowl of local scallops and tuna stall by stall, and the trade-off is that the rice can run out before the 16:00 close.
What to order
- Scallop sashimi from the Mutsu Bay shops
- One otoro topping for three tickets if you want a treat
Locals call it Furukawa Market, and it is five minutes on foot from the east exit of Aomori Station. Buy a strip of twelve meal tickets for ¥2,200 at the information desk and swap one for a bowl of rice at a stand with a red sign. Then walk the aisles of about 30 shops and trade tickets for toppings. Lean tuna costs one ticket and fatty otoro three, so the cheaper cuts stretch the strip further. Mutsu Bay scallops are the local pride, and stalls also take tickets for miso soup and for meat the butcher grills while you wait.
Eat at the tables inside or in the 120-seat rest area upstairs, since a nokke-don cannot leave the building. Draft beer costs ¥500 in cash. Bowls are served from 07:00 to 16:00, and the market asks you to phone ahead if you arrive after 15:00.
Worth knowing
- Ask the stallholders what is good that day; the market says the best toppings change with the season.
- There is no car park, so walk from the station or use the coin parking nearby.
