- 09:00SightWalk the lava cliffs and the suspension bridge at JogasakiThe lava path is sharp and slippery after rain, so carry shoes you can walk in.
- 10:15RideRide the coast through Izu-Kogen toward InatoriRun front and rear lights in every tunnel. Izu Kyuko's 8000-series local trains take unbagged bikes between Minami-Ito and Izukyu-Shimoda if your legs give out.

- 13:00RideClimb on past Kawazu to ShimodaShimoda is the last town with a railway before the west coast.
- 15:00SightWalk Perry Road beside the Hiraname RiverLock the bike and walk, since the lane is narrow and paved in stone.
- 17:00DinnerEat thick-cut kinme-ni at GorosayaBook ahead, because the 24-seat room fills even on weekdays. It closes on Thursdays and takes cash.
- 18:30TrainBag the bike at Izukyu-Shimoda and ride the train homeReach the station early enough to take the wheels off and bag the bike outside the gates. The Odoriko runs through to Tokyo, or change at Atami for the Tokaido Shinkansen. A bike bag over 160 cm in length, width and height added together needs a seat with an oversized-baggage area on the Shinkansen, so book one with your ticket.
Starts and ends at K's House Ito Onsen.
Epic
The routeルート
K's House Ito Onsen puts you in a century-old ryokan with its own hot spring, a short ride from the Seaside Spa at Ito Marine Town. Go early. On a clear winter morning the sun rises out of Sagami Bay while you sit in the outdoor bath. Then the day turns south on the Pacific Cycling Road along the east coast.
Kinmedai is the red-skinned fish this coast lands, and the farm ministry calls Shimoda the country's biggest port for it. It carries the most fat from October to late March. Tokuzomaru has simmered it on the Inatori harbour front since 1971, so time the ride to reach Inatori hungry. Thursday is the wrong day for this plan, since both Tokuzomaru and Gorosaya close.
Shimoda sits about two and a half hours from Tokyo on the Odoriko or the Saphir Odoriko, says the city's tourism office, and the Izukyu line takes about an hour and a half to Atami if you want the Shinkansen. The oversized-baggage seat applies on the Shinkansen leg alone.
Worth knowing
- Shimoda's tourism association rents electric-assist bikes by the station if a friend wants to join for the Perry Road loop.
- Kurofune Hotel's bay-view baths take day visitors from 15:00 if you'd rather finish with a second soak.
