Pacific Cycling Road Stage 3 from Atami to Shiomizaka
太平洋岸自転車道 静岡県区間(熱海〜潮見坂)35°08′ N 139°07′ E448.4 km · 4,222 m up · 35% quiet roadsEpicRoad bike, Touring
Stage 3 of the Pacific Cycling Road is the long Shizuoka stage, from Atami down the east coast of Izu, round the peninsula's tip and up its west coast to Numazu, then along Suruga Bay and the Enshu coast to the Aichi border at Shiomizaka. It suits strong riders with several days, and the west Izu coast between Matsuzaki and Heda is the hardest riding on the route with no railway to fall back on.

Routed over OpenStreetMap with BRouter trekking and measured against Copernicus DEM GLO-30 30 m on 2026-10-12. 20 km crosses bridges or water, where the elevation is drawn straight across. 14.5 km runs through tunnels, drawn straight through the hill.
On the road
- Wind
- JMA's 1991–2020 normals give Omaezaki a prevailing west wind from December to February, averaging 6.4 m/s in January, and Irozaki 6.7 m/s from the west. The Enshu coast from Omaezaki to Lake Hamana runs straight into it on the westbound line.
- Start
- Kanagawa–Shizuoka border at Atami. The stage picks up where Stage 2 ends. JR Atami Station on the Tokaido Line and the Tokaido Shinkansen is the nearest station.
- Finish
- Shizuoka–Aichi border at Shiomizaka. Michi-no-Eki Shiomizaka in Kosai overlooks the Enshu coast at the border, and Stage 4 starts here.
- Getting there
- Izu Kyuko Line
- In winter
- JMA's 1991–2020 normals give Irozaki at the tip of Izu a January mean of 8.2 °C and Omaezaki 6.9 °C, which keeps the coast rideable through winter. Both stations average more than 6 m/s of wind from the west in January.
- In summer
- August averages 26.2 °C at Irozaki and 26.7 °C at Omaezaki by JMA's normals, with humidity above 80%. Climb the west Izu coves early in the day.
- In typhoon
- Typhoons reach Izu and the Enshu coast in late summer and autumn. Check JMA's warnings, and the Suruga Bay Ferry's notices if you plan to cross by boat.
Ride safely
- West Izu between Matsuzaki and Heda has no railway, and the council's repair list names only one shop on that coast. Carry spares, food and lights.
- Izu's coast roads pass through tunnels; run front and rear lights through each one, as the council's map asks.
- Between Omaezaki and Hamamatsu the cycleway runs behind the dunes away from the town centres, so carry food and water, and expect the winter westerly in your face.
- The council's map sets out the rules for the whole route: keep to the left of the carriageway, never ride two abreast, switch lights on at night and in every tunnel, and wear a helmet.

From Atami the line follows the east coast of Izu through Ito and Izu-Kogen, whose station is a gateway, to Shimoda. Izu Kyuko lets bikes ride unbagged on its 8000-series local trains between Minami-Ito and Izukyu-Shimoda, so you can hop on a train anywhere along this coast.
Past Shimoda the line rounds the southern tip of the peninsula and turns north through Matsuzaki, Dogashima, Toi and Heda. The council recommends the sunset coast from Koganezaki through Toi to Koibito Misaki to newer riders, and it calls the rest of Izu's terrain punishing. At Toi the Suruga Bay Ferry crosses to Shimizu if you would rather skip the Numazu shore; book a bike space, since the council lists a limit of eight per sailing.
Beyond Numazu the line follows Suruga Bay past Fuji City to Shimizu, a gateway station and the ferry port, then swings out to Miho and on through Shizuoka City and Yaizu. It runs down the coast to Omaezaki and turns west along the Enshu coast, where Shizuoka's prefectural cycleway follows the dunes toward Hamamatsu. At Bentenjima, another gateway, the line crosses the mouth of Lake Hamana, and MLIT points out the red torii that stands in the lake beside the beach park.
Worth knowing
- Book the Suruga Bay Ferry ahead for the bike. The council lists eight bikes as the limit on each sailing between Shimizu and Toi.
- Stock up on spare tubes before you leave Ito. The council's repair list names only one shop on the west Izu coast, in Matsuzaki.
- Ride the Enshu coast from west to east in winter if your plan allows, with the prevailing wind behind you.
