Yuzawa suits Tokyo riders who want to step off the Shinkansen into an onsen town with a valley full of resorts, and its trade-off is a sprawl of resort blocks around the station that feels more practical than pretty.

Things to do in Yuzawa
Yuzawa is the town around Echigo-Yuzawa Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen, and it had 7,594 residents at the end of September 2026. Kawabata Yasunari wrote Snow Country at the Takahan inn on the hill above town between 1934 and 1937.
Inside the station, Ponshukan pours sake from every Niigata brewery for ¥1,000 a five-cup tasting, and Bakudan Onigiri-ya shapes giant rice balls of Minamiuonuma Koshihikari. Soba houses such as Shinbashi and Nakanoya sit within a few blocks.
The resorts spread out from the station on free shuttles. GALA Yuzawa and Iwappara sit close to town, and Naeba and Kagura lie farther south past Mitsumata. GALA has closed its whole South area for 2026/27, so check which runs are open before you choose it for a day.

What does JaPow mean?
JaPow is skier slang for Japan's powder snow, a blend of Japan and pow. The snow comes from cold northwesterly winds that cross the Sea of Japan and unload on the mountains facing it, with January the snowiest month at every JMA station we keep near a ski area.

Where can you ski on a day trip from Tokyo?
In winter the Shinkansen stops inside GALA Yuzawa's base building. Kagura has the biggest terrain within reach of Echigo-Yuzawa, and Mt.T in Minakami has the steepest, an hour from Tokyo plus a bus.
