Where can you ski on a day trip from Tokyo?
In winter the Shinkansen stops inside GALA Yuzawa's base building. Kagura has the biggest terrain within reach of Echigo-Yuzawa, and Mt.T in Minakami has the steepest, an hour from Tokyo plus a bus.

GALA Yuzawa is the easiest ski day trip from Tokyo, because in winter the Joetsu Shinkansen stops inside its base building and GALA quotes 71 minutes on the fastest train. Kagura has the biggest terrain within reach of Echigo-Yuzawa and the longest season, from 28 November 2026 to 16 May 2027. Strong riders after steep snow should look at Mt.T in Minakami, where a direct bus meets the morning train at Jomo-Kogen. Every resort below sits on the Joetsu Shinkansen, so a day on the snow takes a little over two hours of train time there and back.
We compared seven ski areas a Tokyo rider can reach and ride in one day by train. Ticket prices come from each resort's published 2026/27 table, and train times and fares come from our rail data, sampled from JR East's timetable for 16 October 2026. Karuizawa's slopes aren't in our resort pages yet, so this guide stays on the Joetsu line.
Which resorts work as a day trip from Tokyo?

Train times are morning samples from 16 October 2026, and fares are one-way regular-season reserved seats. Every ticket price is the resort's published 2026/27 figure unless the table says otherwise.
Why is GALA Yuzawa the easiest?
GALA has its own Shinkansen station inside the ski centre, so you step off the train and onto the gondola. The station runs only in winter, and JR East hadn't published its 2026/27 dates by 11 October 2026. Outside those dates, ride to Echigo-Yuzawa and take GALA's free shuttle bus, about 10 minutes.
GALA is smaller this season. On 15 September 2026 it announced that its South area, the four courses on it and the Landau ropeway to Yuzawa Kogen stay shut all season, with a shuttle bus in place of the ropeway. A day ticket costs ¥8,000 at the window or ¥7,500 on the web. GALA's early-bird day ticket at ¥4,800 sells on Webket and JRE MALL from 15 October to 30 November 2026.
GALA suits first-timers and anyone with only a few hours, and a ¥6,500 non-rider ticket for the gondola and the Barouche makes it easy to bring a friend who won't ski. The drawback for 2026/27 is a smaller mountain with its ungroomed side closed.
Which Yuzawa resorts are worth the shuttle?
Kandatsu sits seven minutes from Echigo-Yuzawa's east exit on a free shuttle. It opens on 11 December 2026 and charges ¥5,800 for a weekday and ¥6,800 on Saturdays. Night riding runs from 18:00 to 02:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays from 18 December to 27 March, on a ¥4,900 night ticket. The top sits at about 1,000 m, so strong riders run out of vertical quickly.
Ishiuchi Maruyama is one of the largest areas along the Kan-etsu Expressway, with 25 runs on 14 lifts, including marked tree-run courses, and a free shuttle reaches it from Echigo-Yuzawa in about 10 minutes. It hadn't set its 2026/27 dates or prices by 11 October 2026. The YUZAWA SNOW LINK ticket covers Ishiuchi Maruyama, GALA Yuzawa and Yuzawa Kogen on one pass, and Ishiuchi keeps every rider inside its managed area.
Naeba runs from 18 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, and Prince lights the slopes in front of the hotel every evening to 20:30 from 18 December to 21 March. Its ¥9,800 day ticket covers Naeba, and the ¥11,800 Mt. Naeba ticket adds Kagura by the Dragondola, which runs from 26 December to 22 March. An in-season express bus from Echigo-Yuzawa's east exit runs via Kagura to Naeba. The drawback is the early close, while Kagura next door keeps going into May.
Is Kagura worth the extra time?
Yes, if you want the highest terrain and the longest season around Yuzawa. Kagura climbs to 1,845 m with 1,225 m of vertical over 30 runs, and its season runs longest of the Yuzawa resorts, from 28 November 2026 to 16 May 2027. A day ticket costs ¥8,500 and covers the Kagura, Mitsumata and Tashiro areas. The express bus from Echigo-Yuzawa stops at Mitsumata and Tashiro, and local buses on Route 17 don't enter the car parks.
From Mitsumata you ride a ropeway, chairs and the Kagura Gondola before the high bowl, and the Mitsumata Ropeway takes its last uphill ride at 14:00. Leave early. Kagura's backcountry gate toward Kaguragamine stands at the top of the No.5 Romance lift, which runs from 1 January, and every rider through it posts a climbing plan in the box there and carries a beacon, shovel and probe. Our gates and rescue guide covers its rules.
Can you ski Mt.T on a day trip?
Yes, with an early start. Mt.T is the ski area at the Tanigawadake ropeway in Minakami, and its Doai-guchi base station is 35 minutes from Jomo-Kogen on a direct bus that leaves at 7:58 from 5 December 2026 to 4 April 2027. The bus costs about ¥2,000 and runs outbound only. Catch the 6:36 Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo to make it. Coming home, the Kan-etsu Kotsu line bus takes about 45 minutes to Jomo-Kogen for ¥1,600.
The 1Day Pass costs ¥9,000 from 19 December 2026 to 8 January 2027 and from 1 to 9 March. From 9 January to 28 February the only adult day ticket is the Ultimate 1Day Pass at ¥14,000, limited to 150 riders a day with a reservation that opens in December 2026. Ikon Pass holders need no booking. Spring tickets cost ¥6,000 from 10 March to 4 April. Mt.T publishes 1,500 cm of annual snowfall without saying where it measures it, and the Minakami tourism association says the resort makes no artificial snow.
Mt.T suits strong riders who want steep snow, and its gates open onto unmanaged slopes of 30 to 50 degrees by the resort's own figures. Beginners will find very little room to learn.
What about Norn Minakami?
Norn Minakami is the closest ski area to Minakami town, three kilometres from the expressway, with a free booked shuttle from Jomo-Kogen of about 30 minutes. It opens on 18 December 2026 with ¥3,800 day tickets for the first three days. From 8 January to 21 March 2027 its lifts run to 22:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Norn had posted only its opening prices by 11 October 2026, and its 2025/26 regular day cost ¥6,300. Its five short courses run out after a morning for strong riders.
What does a ski day trip from Tokyo cost?
About ¥19,000 to ¥30,000 an adult for the train and the lift ticket, before rental and food, by our sums of the published 2026/27 fares and tickets.
| Day trip | Return train | Bus | Lift ticket | Total (computed) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kandatsu on a weekday | ¥13,800 | free shuttle | ¥5,800 | ¥19,600 |
| GALA Yuzawa, web ticket | ¥13,800 | none | ¥7,500 | ¥21,300 |
| Kagura | ¥13,800 | express bus fare not in our files | ¥8,500 | ¥22,300 plus the bus |
| Naeba | ¥13,800 | express bus fare not in our files | ¥9,800 | ¥23,600 plus the bus |
| Mt.T in late December | ¥12,260 | about ¥3,600 | ¥9,000 | about ¥24,900 |
| Mt.T from 9 January to 28 February | ¥12,260 | about ¥3,600 | ¥14,000 | about ¥29,900 |
The train column doubles the one-way regular-season reserved fare from Tokyo Station, and the Mt.T bus adds the roughly ¥2,000 direct bus out to the ¥1,600 line bus back.
How do you carry skis or a board on the Shinkansen?
In its own bag, standing upright. JR East lets each passenger carry two items free, each up to 30 kg with length, width and height adding up to 250 cm or less, and skis and boards may run longer when they travel upright in a bag or case. JR East runs no oversized-baggage booking on its Shinkansen, and the luggage areas on some cars fill first come, first served. On a busy Saturday morning, board early and claim a spot.
