japanese
The Geihan Tsushi, the Hiroshima domain's gazetteer, says the town took its name when people filled in the seto, the narrow strait, to make ta, rice fields. We read this through the Japanese Wikipedia article on Setoda-cho, which cites the gazetteer, so treat it as the domain's own account.
Eat in Setoda
Setoda is the town on Ikuchijima, the citrus island halfway along the Shimanami Kaido. Lemons are the main crop and the island calls itself Japan's lemon island. Kosan-ji, the temple an industrialist built from 1936 in honour of his mother, copies famous temples from around the country, and its Hill of Hope is paved in Carrara marble.
The Shiomachi shopping street runs from the port to the temple, and the best rooms on the route sit along it: Azumi Setoda in a salt merchant's house, the bathhouse inn yubune across the street and SOIL Setoda on the waterfront. Ferries run from Mihara in about 30 minutes, so you can arrive without riding the first half.
