Canyons runs rafting and canyoning in Minakami in summer, and its base sits in Yubiso on the road up to the Tanigawadake ropeway. In winter it guides backcountry tours at Mt.T, which it still calls Tenjin, from 15 January to 15 March. A private day costs ¥120,000 for up to four people, and booked guests ride up 30 minutes before the public.
Canyons also works as the official English-language partner of Nozawa Onsen's ski school, and it teaches private lessons across Shiga Kogen, Myoko and Yuzawa. In Minakami it teaches at Hodaigi, leads snowshoe walks along the Yubiso River and runs snow canyoning, its own winter invention. Its shuttle collects guests from Jomo-Kogen or Minakami station when booked ahead.
Worth knowing
- Book Mt.T tours early, because Canyons guides only private groups there and instructor time runs short in the holiday weeks.
- Rent touring skis or a splitboard for ¥10,000 instead of snowshoes; the guides strongly recommend it.
- Buy your lift ticket on the morning of the tour, once the guide tells you which ticket you need.
