Know before you bathe
Check the sign at the door for which bath is men's and which is women's at that hour.
Getting there
Tokaikan stands on the Matsukawa River in central Ito, a 7-minute walk from JR Ito station. It has no car park.
Tokaikan is an old timber ryokan on the Matsukawa River that the city now runs as a cultural building. Its large bath is tiled from floor to walls, and the water pours from a dark lion-head spout by the sculptor Morita Toko. The two baths swap between men and women through the afternoon, so check the time on the door.
The bath only opens at weekends and on holidays, from 11:00 to 19:00. That timing suits a Saturday ride down the east coast on Route 135, with a soak before the train back from Ito station seven minutes away. On weekdays Wada Jurojin no Yu, one of Ito's seven public baths, takes bathers for ¥400.
Worth knowing
- Pair the bath with a walk through the building's upper floors, which the city opens as a museum.
