Know before you bathe
Tenzan calls itself a place for rest and cure. It turns away groups over about six adults and tour parties, and takes no bookings.
Getting there
Tenzan sits at Yumoto-chaya, up the Sukumo valley from Hakone-Yumoto station.
Tenzan Tohji-kyo sits up the Sukumo valley above Hakone-Yumoto and calls itself a tohjiba, a place to rest and recover, which explains the house rules. It takes no groups over about six adults and no tour parties, and nobody can book. Adults pay ¥1,450 in cash.
Tenzan is one of the few Hakone baths that takes tattoos, on one condition: only one tattooed person can be inside at a time, so two friends with tattoos cannot go together. The baths include an indoor bath, the Miharashi-yu and rock baths fed by seven of Tenzan's own sources. The café makes its coffee with spring water from source No. 74.
Worth knowing
- Come on a weekday morning after 09:00, before the Yumoto day crowd arrives.
