Hatsuhana Soba
はつ花そば 本店35°14′ N 139°06′ ESoba
Hatsuhana suits anyone starting or ending a Hakone day at Yumoto who wants soba made with wild mountain yam, and the trade-off is a weekend wait at a riverside room that seats fifty.
What to order
- Seiro soba with jinenjo
- Teijo soba
- Hot yamakake soba in winter
Hatsuhana has made soba beside the Yumoto bridge since November 1934. Its noodles use buckwheat flour, jinenjo wild yam and egg with no water at all, which keeps them from going soft. Seiro soba is the best seller, served cold with a bowl of grated jinenjo to dip into. Teijo soba puts the yam and a raw egg straight on top.
The main shop overlooks the Hayakawa river by the Yumoto bridge, six minutes on foot from Hakone-Yumoto station. Its annexe a hundred metres along the river was closed as of a 9 October 2026 notice, so the main shop carries all the trade. A bowl of hot yamakake soba on a cold winter evening suits the place.
Worth knowing
- Last orders are 18:45, and fried dishes stop at 18:30.
- The yam soba keeps well, so the shop sells it to take home.
