Tenka Chaya

Tenka Chaya suits riders who climb the old Misaka Pass for the view of Fuji over Lake Kawaguchi, and the trade-off is a winter road that can close for snow and take the teahouse's opening with it.
What to order
- Mushroom hoto nabe
- Sansho miso dengaku
- Amazake on a cold day
The teahouse opened in 1934 to feed people crossing Misaka Pass, and it still sits at the top of the old road at about 1,300 metres. On a clear day the window frames Mount Fuji above Lake Kawaguchi. Dazai Osamu set part of his story Fugaku Hyakkei here, and the upstairs memorial room keeps the desk and brazier he used during his stay.
The hoto is vegetable only. Yamanashi's tourism board says the kitchen simmers house-made noodles with plenty of vegetables in local miso and uses no meat at all, and its March 2026 listing prices the mushroom hoto nabe at ¥1,350. Sansho miso dengaku at ¥580 makes a quick snack at the top of the climb. In winter the shop's own site says snow closures on the pass road mean some days off, and it suggests a clear day for the snow-covered Fuji with a cup of warm amazake.
Worth knowing
- Bring cash; the teahouse takes no cards.
- Parking holds about ten cars, so weekend afternoons in autumn fill it quickly.
- A branch called Toge no Chaya sits partway up the mountain road.
