Menkyo Kaiden
麺許皆伝35°29′ N 138°48′ EUdon¥
Menkyo Kaiden suits anyone who wants Yoshida udon at its firm, chewy best before noon, and the trade-off is a three-hour lunch window that ends early when the noodles run out.
What to order
- Yokubari udon with every topping
- Kinpira beef udon
- Takikomi gohan on the side
Yoshida udon is Fujiyoshida's own noodle: thick, hard to bite and served in a broth of miso and soy with boiled cabbage on top. Menkyo Kaiden opens at 11:00 and closes at 14:00, and the city's tourism site says the popular toppings of seasoned egg and chikuten sell out first. The yokubari udon piles on beef, chikuten, wakame and fried tofu, and the house suridane chilli paste carries sesame oil and black sesame. Signed boards from famous visitors cover the walls.
The shop sits about ten minutes on foot from Fujisan station and has twenty parking spaces. It closes on Sundays, which catches out weekend visitors from Tokyo.
Worth knowing
- Order the tsuke (dipping) version on a warm spring day to taste the noodle on its own.
- Bring cash.
