Hakone is the mountain onsen town on the east side of Hakone Pass, in Kanagawa, known for its hot springs, Lake Ashi and Hakone Shrine. In the Edo period the shogunate kept a checkpoint here on the Tokaido. Hakone-Yumoto at the bottom of the valley is the gateway, with the railway and most of the day baths.
Two day baths near Yumoto suit riders. Tenzan Tohji-kyo charges ¥1,450 in cash and admits a tattooed bather who comes alone. Hakone Yuryo, a free shuttle from the station, costs ¥1,700 and up and has private open-air rooms.
