Bed'n Onsen Hammond
¥6,000 a night
Hammond is the Takamiya group's budget house, on a rise in Uenodai about five minutes' walk from the onsen village. The 27 rooms include ten-tatami Japanese rooms, two-room suites, cabin-style twins and corner rooms with mountain views that sleep six. Check-in runs through a web link that sends you the room number and a door code, and a tablet at the desk does the same job.
The log-built bathhouse runs Zao water straight from the source 24 hours a day, apart from 10:00 to 13:00. The open-air bath and a two-person sauna with a cold plunge alternate: women use them from 13:00 to 20:00, and men from 20:30 to 23:00 and again in the morning. Your stay also covers three of the village's public bathhouses and the baths at the other Takamiya inns.
Lounge TLJ has a microwave, toaster and kettle for guests, and a full IH kitchen with pots, a rice cooker and basic seasonings rents for ¥300 an hour. For dinner, walk down to the village for jingisukan. Jalan lists a drying room and the slopes within five minutes' walk, and staff fetch guests from the bus terminal between 9:00 and 18:00 when you phone.
