The city tells this as a traditional account alongside the founding legend of the Oyu spring.
Atami is the first Izu stop on the Tokaido Shinkansen and an onsen city that tumbles down hills to the sea. The city's own history says hot water once boiled up so fiercely in the bay that people called the shore atsuumi, the hot sea, and the name softened to Atami. Tokugawa Ieyasu came here in 1604, and the city marked 400 years since his visit with a free foot bath in front of the station.
From Atami the JR Ito line runs down the east coast toward Ito and Shimoda, which makes the station a natural start for a coast ride south. The Yu-Yu bus loop round the sights is suspended on all days, so walk or ride between them. Guest House Maruya by the station gives a budget bed, and Risonare Atami sits up the hill for a resort night.
