Shimanami Japan runs the public rental bikes on the route from ten terminals between Onomichi Station and Imabari Station. You can collect a bike at one and return it at any other, so most people ride from Onomichi to Imabari and take the bus back. The terminals at Onomichi Station and the two in Imabari open at 8:00. The seven on the islands work from 9:00 to 17:00.
Cross bikes and city bikes cost ¥3,000 a day for adults and ¥1,000 for children, and you can keep them for several days. Battery-assisted bikes cost ¥4,000 and can also stay out overnight. The sports E-bike costs ¥8,000 a day and has to be back before the terminal closes that evening. You collect it at Onomichi Station or at one of the Imabari terminals, and riders need to be at least 145 cm tall. Neither of Shimanami Japan's rental pages listed a deposit on 11 October 2026.
Booking ahead matters most in spring, autumn, Golden Week and Obon. Each terminal holds some bikes for walk-ups, first come first served, and battery-assisted bikes tend to go early even on weekdays. On a busy holiday the stock can be gone by about 10:00. If a bike breaks down, call Shimanami Japan on 0848-22-3911 and staff will bring a replacement out to the route between 9:00 and 17:00.
Worth knowing
- Bicycles cross the Shimanami Kaido bridges toll-free until 31 March 2028, after Hiroshima Prefecture announced a two-year extension of the Shimanami Cycling Free scheme from April 2026. Motorized bikes still pay.
- The Onomichi Station terminal is about 130 metres to the right as you leave the station's south exit.
- A bike returned after the terminal has closed costs extra, so check the hours of the terminal you are heading for before you set out.
- Plan the day to finish at a terminal, because rental bikes may not travel on trains, buses, cars or taxis.
- The Onomichi Station terminal also takes bags for Sagawa's same-day luggage service from 8:00 to 9:00.
- Sunrise Itoyama, the building that houses the Imabari Itoyama terminal, closed for renovation from 15 September 2026 and Imabari city expects it back around winter 2027/28. Shimanami Japan's terminal list still showed the Itoyama terminal on 11 October 2026 with no closure notice, so phone 0848-22-3911 before planning to collect or drop a bike there, or use the Imabari Station terminal.
- On Sunday 25 October 2026 the expressway main line closes for Cycling Shimanami, from 6:00 to 12:40 between Imabari IC and Innoshima-kita IC, and the cycle and moped paths stay open as usual.

How do you send skis, boards and bikes ahead in Japan?
Hand a covered ski or board bag to Yamato two days before you ride and it waits at the resort desk. A bike goes only boxed, within 200 cm and 30 kg, and Sagawa's web booking stays down after its September 2026 breach.
