Nagasaki suits travellers who want a harbour city layered with Chinese, European and Christian history, and its steep hills make it a city for trams and walking more than riding.

Nagasaki wraps round a deep harbour, with houses climbing the hills on every side. At 11:02 am on 9 August 1945 an atomic bomb exploded over the Urakami district in the north of the city, and the city counts 73,884 deaths by the end of that year. The Atomic Bomb Museum and the hypocentre in Peace Park are where to begin understanding it.
Chanpon was born here in 1899 at Shikairo, and the Chinese community of Shinchi Chinatown still shapes the city's winter: the Lantern Festival hangs about 15,000 lanterns through the centre, from 5 to 21 February in 2027. In early October the Kunchi festival of Suwa Shrine fills the streets.
