Date rule: Timed each year to the Chinese Lunar New Year.
The Chinese community of Nagasaki's Shinchi Chinatown used to celebrate the Lunar New Year with a Spring Festival, and in 1994 the city widened it into the Lantern Festival. It is now one of the big events of Nagasaki's winter.
About 15,000 Chinese lanterns hang across Chinatown, the Hamanomachi and Kanko-dori arcades and the streets in between, with lantern figures up to about 10 metres tall. The Confucian shrine decorates its halls for New Year prayers, and parades and shows run through the 17 days.
