Madarao Kogen is a small resort village of pensions and lodges on the Iiyama side of Mt. Madarao, and it suits families and tree skiers who want a quieter mountain than Nozawa. The trade-off is choice: a handful of restaurants and no onsen street.

Who should base here
Stay in Madarao if you want a quiet ski village with short lift queues and a shuttle to Nozawa or Myoko for a change of mountain. Night owls will find it too sleepy.
Madarao Kogen sits at about 1,000 metres on the slopes of Mt. Madarao, on the border with Niigata, and Tangram Ski Circus shares the mountain from the Shinanomachi side. Madarao Kogen Hotel stands on a rise in the middle of the village, and its own baths draw sodium-calcium chloride water from a natural spring.
Buses climb from Iiyama Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen. In winter the NOTOMA shuttle runs between Nozawa Onsen, Iiyama Station and Madarao for ¥1,400, and the Myoko Shuttle links Madarao with Akakura Onsen and Myoko Kogen for ¥2,000, according to the hotel's access page. That makes Madarao an easy add-on to a Nozawa or Myoko trip.
