Kurobe suits riders on the Toyama Bay route and travellers bound for the gorge who need the Shinkansen stop, and its trade-off is a city that spreads thin between the coast and the station.

Who should base here
Stay up the valley at Unazuki Onsen and come down to the coast for a ride or a fish lunch.
Kurobe runs from the Sea of Japan up the Kurobe River into the gorge, and Unazuki Onsen lies inside the city boundary. Kurobe-Unazukionsen station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen sits next to Shin-Kurobe on the Toyama Chiho Railway, which carries you up to Unazuki in 25 minutes. Down on the coast the old fishing quarter of Ikuji lies on the Toyama Bay Cycling Route.
Uo-no-eki Ikuji is the Kurobe fishermen's cooperative market, selling the morning catch from 9:00 and serving lunch from 11:00 to 15:00. It closes on Wednesdays and 1 January. Toyama's tourism site puts it 25 minutes on foot from Ikuji station on the Ainokaze line and seven minutes by car from Kurobe station.
Worth knowing
- Ride the bay route east from Ikuji on a weekday; the market and its restaurant close on Wednesdays.
