Kawabata Yasunari wrote Snow Country in the Kasumi room at Takahan between late autumn 1934 and 1937, and the inn screens the film of the novel every evening at 20:00. The house stands on the hill above Yuzawa's onsen streets.
Takahan's Tamago-no-yu comes from a spring the inn says an ancestor found about 900 years ago. The water reaches the tubs at about 43.5°C with no added water or heating, and the bath is refilled every three hours.
There are 34 rooms, almost all Japanese-style. Room-only plans let you eat at the izakaya in town, and the inn collects staying guests from Echigo-Yuzawa Station, five minutes away by car.
