Ochiairo
Ochiairo opened in 1874 at Yugashima, where two rivers meet in the Amagi hills, and the state now lists its buildings as tangible cultural properties. It has 16 rooms, each designed differently, plus a three-storey house of 547 square metres that sleeps up to twelve. Plan Do See runs it today and kept the old timber while refitting the bathrooms.
The outdoor bath looks over the mountains and the stream, and the water runs free-flowing from the source. The big baths and saunas swap between men and women by the hour and close from midnight to 5:00. Check-in starts at 15:00, and the inn closes to clean between guests, so early arrivals wait in the lounge.
A free shuttle leaves Shuzenji Station's north exit at 14:15, 15:15 and 16:15 for guests who book it three days ahead. Tokai buses from Shuzenji take about 35 minutes to the Arajuku stop, one minute's walk away. Shuzenji is about 20 minutes by car, and Joren Falls about 10.
